Veraison in Cabernet Sauvignon at Bacchus Vineyard courtesy of Victor Perez

Veraison, the changing of color of the grapes, has begun in the Columbia Valley, Washington’s largest winegrowing region. Color change was noted in Cabernet Sauvignon at Bacchus Vineyard in the White Bluffs appellation on Tuesday July 15th. Of note, this block had pre-bloom leaf removal. This date corresponds closely with averages for the last 13 years. (See growing season marker data since 2013.)

Looking at Growing Degree Days, a measure of heat accumulation, the Columbia Valley is slightly ahead of long-term averages. However, the story of the 2025 growing season continues to be written.
