The Washington wine industry has created the Allen Shoup Memorial Fellowship. This fellowship, which is an industry-wide collaboration, will give one writer or communicator each year an immersive experience in Washington wine. This person will also receive a stipend. The fellowship is funded entirely through donations.

Allen Shoup passed away in 2022. Allen was a visionary who led the state’s largest winery, Ste. Michelle Wine Estates (at the time known as Stimson Lane), and also founded Long Shadows. He left an indelible impression on the Washington wine industry. This fellowship is intended as a continuation of his legacy. The goal is to grow consumer awareness and perception of Washington wine by elevating emerging writers and communicators.

It is my honor to have a seat on the selection panel to determine who will receive the fellowship in 2024. Others on the panel include Karen MacNeil (Karen MacNeil & Co.), Eric Degerman (Great Northwest Wine), Devyani Gupta (Valdemar Estates), and Dane Narbaitz (Long Shadows Vintners).
