While the cool temperatures of 2010 caused a great deal of consternation among Washington growers and winemakers, the results so far for white wines have been impressive. In fact, 2010 looks to be one of the strongest vintages for Washington whites in recent memory.

The 2010 growing season featured the coolest temperatures the state had seen since 1999, predating the rapid rise in wineries in Washington State. This meant many winemakers, and even many growers, were working in an environment that they were unfamiliar with. Despite this, many excelled.

One of the hallmarks of the 2010 vintage, for both red and white wines, is significantly higher acid levels. During warmer years, such as 2009, achieving phenolic ripeness while retaining sufficient acid levels can be a challenge for white grapes. Not so in 2010, when phenolic ripeness was attained at lower sugar levels while acids remained high.

It did not, however, work out for everyone. Some of the 2010 whites, especially Rieslings, have shown a slight bitter note on the palate. Additionally, some have acidity in the extreme – and this from someone who likes acid. Overall, though the 2010 vintage brings much to enjoy. While Washington whites will most likely always be in the shadow of their red counterparts in terms of both quality and focus, 2010 is one year to drink up.

Rating: ** (Exceptional) Intoxicating, compellingly complex aromas of honeydew melon, marzipan, crushed almonds, and spice. Hard to get past the nose and take the first sip. The palate is textured with incredible body and weight with lemony acidity and an exceptionally long finish. Nothing short of an accomplishment of a wine that is the best Marsanne I have had from Washington by a long stretch. 100% Marsanne. Rating: + (Good) The combination of few words fill me as much fear as these two – Chardonnay and Viognier. These two grapes are incredibly easy to foul up on their own let alone trying to blend them. However, there is nothing to fear with this wine from Bookwalter, one that beautifully combines the best that these grapes have to offer. An aromatic wine with floral notes, peaches, pear, and spice. The palate has abundant peach, melon, and apple flavors with crisp, mouthwatering acidity. 74% Chardonnay, 26% Viognier. Co-fermented and aged in stainless steel. 13.5% alcohol. 1,184 cases produced.
