Bloom has begun in the Columbia Valley. Brittany Komm, vineyard operations manager at Sagemoor Vineyards, noted bloom in Chardonnay on May 19th at both Weinbau and Sagemoor vineyards in the Wahluke Slope and White Bluffs appellations, respectively.
This aligns closely with vintages since 2013. See the average and median bloom dates since that year here.
Growing Degree Days, a measure of heat accumulation, are currently tracking near the Columbia Valley’s long-term average. However, the season is just beginning in earnest.
