California-based O’Neill Vintners & Distillers has acquired the brand Wines of Substance from House of Smith, one of Washington’s largest producers. Terms of the sale were not disclosed.

“With Substance, Charles Smith has tapped into the ethos of Washington winemaking and built critically acclaimed wines that deliver the essence of Washington’s terroir,” Jeff O’Neill, founder and CEO of O’Neill Vintners & Distillers, said in a press release, referencing House of Smith founder Charles Smith. “We see tremendous opportunity to engage new consumers through this amazing brand.”

For O’Neill, the purchase creates a beachhead in Washington, with Wines of Substance producing several hundred thousand cases per year. It also expands O’Neill’s nationally distributed brands.
