283 wines reviewed in the September issue of Wine Enthusiast. EFESTE leads the way with a strong set of red, white, and rosé releases. A few particular standouts are the Boushey and Red Willow Syrahs (EFESTE 2013 Jolie Bouche Boushey Vineyard Syrah Yakima Valley $44, 92 points; EFESTE 2013 Eleni Red Willow Vineyard Syrah Yakima Valley $54, 92 points); a standout second vintage of the Oldfield Rosé (EFESTE 2015 Oldfield Estate Rosé Yakima Valley $22, 92 points; and finally a stellar oyster wine in the Feral Sauvignon Blanc (EFESTE 2015 Feral Evergreen Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc Ancient Lakes $20, 91 points).
Meanwhile Fidelitas continues to impress with its red wines. We already know that Champoux Vineyard is one of the state’s top sites (Fidelitas 2013 Champoux Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Horse Heaven Hills $65, 93 points). But how about up-and-coming Quintessence Vineyard on Red Mountain (Fidelitas 2013 Quintessence Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Red Mountain $60, 93 points)? In a high quality lineup, the winery’s vineyard designates are not to be missed.
The young Force Majeure Vineyard is showing promise for its Rhone varieties (Force Majeure 2013 Collaboration Series Force Majeure Vineyard Grenache Red Mountain $55, 92 points).
Intrinsic, a new project from Ste. Michelle Wine Estates, offers superb value with its Cabernet Sauvignon. Intriguingly, this wine saw no new oak and a large portion of the fruit was left on the skins for a staggering nine months (Intrinsic 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Columbia Valley $22 92 points).
Kerloo offers up a strong set of red releases, including a compelling Mourvedre from Boushey Vineyard (Kerloo 2014 Boushey Vineyard Mourvèdre Yakima Valley $48, 92 points) and Malbec from StoneTree (Kerloo 2014 The Apocalypse Stone Tree Vineyard Malbec Wahluke Slope $48, 91 points).
Kevin White makes his first foray into DuBrul Vineyard, with impressive – and impressively priced – results (Kevin White 2013 Heritage DuBrul Vineyard Yakima Valley $35, 92 points).
Mark Ryan continues to make compelling red wines, whether it’s Bordeaux-style (Mark Ryan 2013 Long Haul Red Wine Columbia Valley $50, 93 points; Mark Ryan 2013 Lonely Heart Cabernet Sauvignon Red Mountain $95 94 points) or Rhone-style (Mark Ryan 2013 Wild Eyed Syrah Red Mountain $48, 93 points; Mark Ryan 2013 Crazy Mary Mourvèdre Red Mountain $48, 93 points).
Saviah Cellars has always shown a knack for producing high quality as well as high value wines. However, the winery’s new estate vineyard down in The Rocks District is taking things to a new level (Saviah 2013 The Funk Estate Syrah Walla Walla Valley $60, 94 points).
Finally, Waters continues to make standout wines. The winery’s latest releases include two new additions, a Merlot and Tempranillo, both of which are well worth a look (Waters 2014 Merlot Washington $NA 92 points; Waters 2012 Stone Tree Tempranillo Wahluke Slope $28, 93 points).

This is a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. Aromas of barrel spice, herb and coffee lead to easy-going vanilla and coffee flavors. Barrel notes are dominant but it brings appeal. Best Buy
14 Hands 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Columbia Valley $12 87 points
Cocoa, dark-roasted-coffee and vanilla aromas are followed by lightly sweet plum and dark fruit flavors that possess a tacky feel. The flavors linger on the finish. Best Buy
14 Hands 2013 The Reserve Syrah Horse Heaven Hills $30 89 points
Aromas of blue fruit intermingle with vanilla and wood spice. The palate is lush and forward, bringing a lot of enjoyment.
14 Hands 2013 The Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon Horse Heaven Hills $30 90 points
Dried herb and wood spice aromas are followed by sappy black fruit flavors backed by a light squeeze of tannins. There’s no mistaking the warm vintage it comes from.
14 Hands 2014 Stampede Red Blend Columbia Valley $12 88 points
This wine is a unique blend of Syrah, Merlot, Viognier, Cabernet Sauvignon and Mourvèdre. It seems locked up, with aromas of pickling spices, smoke, berry and vanilla that are followed by broad blue and black-fruit flavors that provide appeal. Best Buy
14 Hands NV Brut Rosé Method Champenoise Sparkling Blend Columbia Valley $15 88 points
A very pretty pale pink color, this wine opens with aromas of citrus rind, spice and strawberry. The flavors are dry, with a lively mousse that keeps the interest high.
14 Hands 2013 The Reserve Red Blend Horse Heaven Hills $30 88 points
Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon take the lead on this blend, with the balance Cabernet Franc and Malbec. Aromas of toast, vanilla and red and black fruit are followed by generous fruit and barrel flavors.
21 Grams 2011 Washington $125 92 points
This wine is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon (85%) along with 9% Petit Verdot and 6% Malbec, with most of the fruit coming from top sites of Cold Creek Vineyard and Stone Tree vineyards. Tightly wound up right now, it offers aromas of high-toned herbs, vanilla, spice and dark fruit. The palate is soft and flavorful, with plush yet delicate cherry flavors and fine-grained tannins that lead to an extended, fruit-filled finish. It’s a very sophisticated wine with a long life in front of it. Best from 2021 to 2030. Cellar Selection
Almquist 2009 Konnowac Vineyard Merlot Rattlesnake Hills $28 86 points
The volatiles are high while the flavors offer notes of cranberry and cherry that provide enjoyment.
Almquist 2009 Chandler Reach Vineyard Merlot Yakima Valley $28 86 points
Vineyard designated Merlot is a rarity in the state, though this is one of the three the winery made in this vintage. Amped volatile aromas and generous barrel spices are followed by light, slightly dried-out cranberry and cherry flavors.
Almquist 2010 Garagiste Rosso Red Blend Washington $20 90 points
This wine is a blend of Sangiovese (65%) and Barbera. Cranberry, raspberry and baking spice aromas are followed by generous tart fruit flavors with an electric jolt of acid. The acid is quite bracing to have on its own. Pair it with pasta with a red sauce.
Almquist 2010 Vintner’s Select Spice Cabinet Vineyard Sangiovese Horse Heaven Hills $30 90 points
Light aromas of spice, graphite and sour cherry are followed by elegant, tart fruit flavors. It’s a pretty expression of the variety that should sing at the dinner table.
Almquist 2010 Vintner’s Select Sugarloaf Vineyard Tempranillo Rattlesnake Hills $30 86 points
Reserved aromas of vanilla, pickling spices and cherry are followed by light cranberry flavors with the concentration wanting.
Almquist 2014 Vintner’s Select Enchanted Winemaker Riesling Washington $20 85 points
Aromas of flowers, mandarin orange, lime and lees lead to a medium-sweet palate. There’s intrigue but it doesn’t have the concentration to hold it all together.
Almquist 2010 Smitten Winemaker Nebbiolo Washington $30 86 points
Aromas of saddle leather and sour cherry are followed by lightly styled tart cherry flavors and gritty tannins.
Almquist 2009 Lacoye Ambassador Vineyard Syrah Red Mountain $32 88 points
The aromas provide notes of baking spice, vanilla, licorice and dark fruit that are starting to show some bottle age. Full-bodied dried red-fruit and cranberry flavors lead to a tart finish.
Almquist 2010 Clifton Vineyard Zinfandel Wahluke Slope $30 86 points
Spice, herb, smoke and pencil-eraser aromas lead to elegant, tart fruit flavors that don’t seem to have fully ripened.
Almquist 2014 Lé Orange Vintner’s Select Pinot Gris Washington $20 85 points
With a notable orange tinge, the aromas offer notes of flowers and orange peel, seeming to show a touch of oxygen exposure. It drinks off dry, with abundant orange-rind and smoke flavors.
Almquist 2014 Late Harvest Champoux Vineyard Muscat Horse Heaven Hills $30 83 points
Aromas of orange rind and flowers are offset by light volatile notes. It drinks medium sweet but lacks the acidity or focus to hold it together.
Almquist 2010 Vintner’s Select Boushey Vineyard Syrah Yakima Valley $45 88 points
Coming from a cool vintage and one of the state’s top Syrah sites, this wine is starting to show some age, with evolved notes of dried fruit, mineral, licorice and baking spice. The cranberry, cherry and spice flavors show depth and intensity. Drink now.
Almquist 2013 Pinot Noir Horse Heaven Hills $35 84 points
Varietally designated Pinot Noirs are an extreme rarity from this warm region. This one brings notes of cranberry, copper penny and herb, although the aromas not in sync. The flavors are plump and sweet, showing a sense of elegance.
Almquist 2009 Milbrant Vineyard Syrah Wahluke Slope $28 88 points
Generous aromas of baking spice, clove and vanilla lead to quite tart, tangy cranberry and cherry flavors, with the oak and the fruit playing off each other.
Almquist 2009 Purple Sage Vineyard Dolcetto Wahluke Slope $28 89 points
Aromas of baking spice, clove and dried red fruit lead to full yet elegant flavors that coat the palate. It doesn’t quite stand up on its own but should do well at the dinner table.
Almquist 2010 Vintner’s Select Tinto Doce Upland Vineyard Red Blend Washington $35 87 points
The aromas are surprisingly reserved, with notes of vanilla, spice and brown sugar. The palate provides brown-sugar and purple-fruit flavors, with the vanilla notes from the oak riding high. Coffee flavors persist on the finish.
Almquist 2009 Clifton Vineyard Zinfandel Wahluke Slope $28 85 points
The aromas bring notes of vanilla, baking spices, Craisins, asphalt and raspberries that seem a bit evolved. The palate drinks off dry and full, with almost port-like flavors.
Almquist 2010 Vintner’s Select Upland Vineyard Touriga Nacional Washington $30 86 points
This variety is a relative newcomer to the state. It intrigues with aromas of citrus and flowers that are followed by smoky flavors with a cranberry and flower-filled finish.
Almquist 2009 Northridge Vineyard Merlot Wahluke Slope $28 86 points
Baking spice and dried cherry and cranberry aromas lead to lighter-styled fruit flavors with a gentle grip of tannins. It trails on the finish.
Almquist 2008 Northridge Vineyard Shiraz Wahluke Slope $25 87 points
Lightly volatile aromas are followed by cranberry, cherry and herb flavors that show intensity and freshness.
Almquist 2012 Vintner’s Select Konnowac Vineyard Tannat Washington $30 86 points
The volatiles are quite amped while the cranberry flavors are backed by a firm grip tannins. There’s good intensity and flavor but it doesn’t all come together.
Almquist 2009 Destiny Ridge Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Horse Heaven Hills $32 87 points
Ripe aromas of cherry, spice and licorice pop, with the warmth of the vintage—along with just-in-check volatiles—showing. The cranberry and green herb flavors are tart and full, yet still show some elegance and persistence.
Almquist 2010 Vintner’s Select Weinbau Vineyard Carmenère Wahluke Slope $30 89 points
Even considering the cool vintage, this warm-site wine comes in at an alcohol level rarely seen in the state. There’s no mistaking the variety, with abundant aromas of freshly cut green and jalapeño pepper that are followed by elegant, reserved cherry and spice flavors. It provides a lot of intrigue and enjoyment.
Almquist 2010 Vintner’s Select Purple Sage Vineyard Dolcetto Wahluke Slope $30 86 points
The aromas offer notes of baking spice, dried fruit and vanilla, seeming to show some oxygen exposure. The cranberry flavors are sweet and tart, with the concentration not all there.
Almquist 2010 Vintner’s Select Konnowac Vineyard Petit Verdot Washington $30 87 points
Light aromas of flowers, herbs and soil are followed by tart cranberry, smoke and citrus flavors and firm, gritty tannins. It doesn’t stand up by itself but has a place at the dinner table alongside a juicy steak.
Almquist 2013 Kira’s Cuvee Red Blend Washington $30 88 points
Grenache makes up 70% of this wine with the rest equal parts Mourvèdre and Syrah. The aromas of raspberry and spice are brooding while the raspberry, cranberry and floral flavors are tart and lithe, with a finish that lingers.
Almquist 2013 Raven’s Petit(e) Red Blend Washington $30 89 points
An unusual blend of two-thirds Petite Sirah and one third Petit Verdot, this wine offers notes of baking spices, freshly tilled soil, dried cherries and flowers. The palate brings a mixture of purple and black fruit, backed by a wall of near-impenetrable tannins that still show balance and restraint.
Almquist 2010 Griffin’s Cuvee Red Blend Washington $30 87 points
This wine is an unusual blend of equal parts Carmenere and Petit Verdot. The former takes the lead on the aromas with notes of whole green and jalapeño pepper. The peppery flavors provide interest but the light concentration can’t keep the focus together.
Almquist 2010 Sumi’s Malbec Washington $30 85 points
Barrel aromas of vanilla and baking spice are at the fore, with cranberry lurking in the background. The dried fruit flavors drink off dry, with cranberry flavors on the finish.
Auclair 2013 96 Cedars Red Mountain $25 90 points
Aromas of wood spice, black licorice, graphite and blackberry are followed by cranberry and cherry flavors. It shows a fine sense of balance.
Baer 2013 Star Columbia Valley $35 90 points
Merlot (59%) takes the lead on this blend, which is balanced out by Cabernet Franc. Intriguing aromas of herbs, flowers, spice raspberries, café au lait and barrel spices lead to silky, polished fruit and barrel flavors that linger.
Baer 2013 Callisto Red Blend Columbia Valley $39 91 points
Cabernet Sauvignon makes up half of this wine with the rest Syrah (40%) and Petit Verdot. Aromas of blackberry seed, spice, black licorice and dark fruit lead to ripe, full and appealing black-fruit flavors. It’s a hedonistic delight.
Baer 2015 Shard Unoaked Stillwater Creek Vineyard Chardonnay Columbia Valley $25 89 points
This warm-vintage white is expressive, with aromas of apple and pear along with whiffs of mango. The palate is full bodied and broad in feel, showing some pleasing nuance.
Baer 2013 Arctos Columbia Valley $43 91 points
Cabernet Sauvignon (84%) takes the lead on this wine, with the rest equal parts Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Aromas of high-toned herbs, wood spices, cocoa, cassis and a mixture of maraschino and dark cherries are followed by a full palate, overflowing with generous fruit flavors.
Baer 2013 Ursa Columbia Valley $43 91 points
This wine is mostly Merlot and Cabernet Franc (42% each) with the balance Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. It’s redolent with aromas of flowers, raspberries, herbs, coffee and barrel spice that lead to tightly wound focused fruit flavors. There’s enough tannic heft to reward cellaring.
Baer 2013 Malbec Columbia Valley $25 92 points
The variety announces itself with aromas of dark plum, fig, herbs and blackberry bud that enchant the senses. The fruit flavors are soft and plush, showing a dazzling sense of purity along with a finish that lingers. It flat out impresses.
Beast 2013 Wildebeest Red Blend Columbia Valley $25 90 points
This wine is principally Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc along with bits of Malbec, Grenache and Merlot. Aromas of green garden herbs and earthy funk are followed by soft, elegant earth and dark fruit flavors that bring appeal and intrigue.
Bethany Vineyard 2012 Gracee Estate Produced Pinot Noir Washington $28 87 points
There’s no mistaking the variety, with aromas of sarsaparilla, underbrush and cherry, though a rubber-tire note provides some distraction. The cherry, strawberry and cranberry flavors show good concentration, though they seem a bit clunky at times.
Bethany Vineyard 2011 Estate Produced Pinot Noir Washington $25 83 points
Aromas of mesquite, smoke, strawberry, freesia and herbs are followed by quite light fruit flavors. The concentration seems wanting.
Bethany Vineyard 2013 Reserve Estate Produced Barbera Columbia Valley $28 86 points
Bright aromas of macerated cranberries and maraschino cherries along with vanilla and wood spice accents are followed by tart and appealing fruit flavors. The oak gets a bit too prominent.
Big DeVine 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Columbia Valley $15 88 points
Fresh herb and black currant aromas lead to ripe black-cherry flavors. It’s fruit-forward and provides a lot of easy-drinking appeal.
Brian Carter Cellars 2012 Trentenaire Columbia Valley $45 91 points
Petit Verdot (62%) takes the lead on this blend, followed by Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Cabernet Franc. The flower, green herb, coffee and barrel spice aromas are brooding, while the palate offers bright acids, firm tannins and a spot-on sense of balance.
Brian Carter Cellars 2014 One Olsen Vineyard Viognier Yakima Valley $32 89 points
The aromas are bright, with notes of peach and flowers that display a sense of delicacy. The flavors are light but nuanced, displaying a fine sense of balance.
Brian Carter Cellars 2012 Corrida Red Blend Columbia Valley $34 90 points
This wine is a unique blend of Tempranillo (62%), Graciano, Cabernet, Merlot and Garnacha. Spice, coffee, tobacco, vanilla and red-fruit aromas are followed by a smooth, elegant palate, with flavors that linger.
Brian Carter Cellars 2012 Byzance Red Blend Columbia Valley $34 90 points
Grenache and Syrah make up just over three-quarters of this blend, with the rest Mourvèdre, Counoise and Cinsault. Smoke, coffee, raspberry and barrel spice aromas lead to rich, full-feeling coffee and fruit flavors that linger.
Browne Family Vineyards 2013 Malbec Columbia Valley $36 87 points
This wine is a blend of fruit from Summit View, Klipsun and Doval vineyards. Aromas of wood spice, purple fruit, vanilla and exotic spice are followed by tart cranberry and cherry flavors, with the midpalate dipping in concentration. The tannins bring quite a bit of grip.
Browne Family Vineyards 2015 Rosé Grenache Columbia Valley $18 88 points
This pale salmon-colored wine shows bright aromas of watermelon and strawberry. The palate drinks dry with mouthwateringly tart fruit flavors.
Browne Family Vineyards 2013 Petit Verdot Columbia Valley $36 89 points
The aromas of wood spice, violets and dark fruit are high toned and brooding. The palate offers firm tannins but also a sense of balance that provides intrigue.
Browne Family Vineyards 2013 Cabernet Franc Columbia Valley $36 88 points
This wine is all varietal coming from Canyon Vineyard Ranch and Blackrock vineyards. Aromas of herbs, vanilla, dill and coffee are followed by full-feeling chocolate and cherry flavors. Vanilla and coffee notes linger on the finish.
Browne Family Vineyards 2015 Sauvignon Blanc Columbia Valley $18 86 points
The citrus, herb and mint aromas are expressive but show some reduction. The citrus and tropical flavors are broad and creamy, though the concentration at times seems light.
Bunchgrass 2014 Roussanne Walla Walla Valley $26 88 points
This is a 100% varietal, single vineyard wine coming from Cockburn Ranch Vineyard. Aromas of lees and spice lead to nutty flavors that are broad in feel.
Bunchgrass 2012 Triolet Walla Walla Valley $30 91 points
This wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (62%), Cabernet Franc (30%) and Petit Verdot. Aromas of coffee, dried herbs, green pepper and smoke are followed by creamy-feeling cherry and café au lait flavors. It brings a whole lot of appeal.
Bunchgrass 2012 Founder’s Blend Walla Walla Valley $30 91 points
A blend of Cabernet Franc (60%) and Merlot, this wine offers high-toned aromas of dried herbs, milk chocolate and cherry, along with an undertone of green pepper. The chocolate and cherry flavors are silky and linger long after the last sip.
Bunnell 2010 Discovery Vineyard Syrah Horse Heaven Hills $44 88 points
This cool-vintage wine offers aromas of vanilla, coconut, barrel spice, clove and red fruit. The palate is full of restrained cranberry flavors that show persistence.
Bunnell 2013 BDX Merlot Red Mountain $38 87 points
Despite the warmth of the vintage and the growing region, this wine comes off as green aromatically. The flavors show ripeness but there seems to be a disconnect.
Bunnell 2010 Mourvèdre Red Mountain $36 90 points
Equal parts Heart of the Hill and Red Heaven fruit, this wine opens with barrel aromas of vanilla and shaved coconut in front of dark fruit. The flavors are full in feel but retain a sense of elegance, with cranberry and vanilla flavors intertwining on the finish. The barrel notes are quite prominent but overall it works.
Bunnell 2011 Syrah Red Mountain $44 87 points
The aromas of green herb and dark berries give the perception of being underripe, with a green undertone along with notes of black licorice. The palate is elegant in style, pulling up toward the finish.
Bunnell 2013 BDX Painted Hills Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Columbia Valley $38 88 points
Aromas of smoke, vanilla, green herbs and spice are followed by generous cherry and barrel flavors. The wood juts out but it still brings enjoyment.
Bunnell 2011 Grenache Columbia Valley $36 90 points
Vanilla, baking spice, dark-fruit and herb aromas are followed by elegant cranberry and raspberry flavors. Spice flavors linger on the finish. It’s a pretty expression of the variety, showing impeccable balance.
Bunnell 2010 Clifton Hill Vineyard Syrah Wahluke Slope $42 88 points
Subdued dried herb, vanilla and dill aromas mix with notes of baking spice. The red-fruit flavors are light and elegant, winnowing toward the finish.
Bunnell 2012 BDX Discovery Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Horse Heaven Hills $48 89 points
Coming from an up-and-coming vineyard, this wine offers aromas of dried herb, vanilla, baking spice and cherry. Fruit and barrel flavors mix on the palate, continuing through the finish.
Bunnell 2013 Helène White Blend Yakima Valley $24 89 points
This wine is a blend Viognier (60%) and Roussanne. Aromas of almond butter, lees and spice are followed by a broad palate with a creamy feel. The finish lingers.
Buried Cane 2013 Heartwood Red Blend Columbia Valley $25 90 points
Syrah (37%), Grenache (24%) and Mourvèdre (19%) take the lead on this blend, with the balance Cinsault, Counoise, Cabernet and Viognier. Perfumed aromas of flowers, blue fruit and herbs lead to sweet, plentiful blue and black-fruit flavors that coat the palate from end to end. The finish lingers.
Buried Cane 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Columbia Valley $16 86 points
Dried herb, sugared plum and tire rubber aromas are followed by light, slightly sweet fruit flavors. The tannins run quite dry.
Burnt Bridge 2013 Blend O Walla Walla Valley $40 88 points
Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot each make up 40% of this wine, with the balance Cabernet Franc. The aromas suggest notes of herbs, fruit leather and anise that are followed by tart, palate-coating cranberry flavors, with celery notes on the finish.
Burnt Bridge 2014 Pont Brûlé Blanc White Blend Columbia Valley $25 87 points
This wine is equal parts Walla Walla Valley Viognier and Yakima Valley Roussanne. Aromas of lees, almond and apricot are followed by elegantly styled flavors that linger.
Burnt Bridge 2013 Blend X Walla Walla Valley $40 87 points
This wine is two-thirds Merlot, with the balance Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Mesquite, dark cherry, vanilla, herb and spice aromas lead to tart, tingly flavors with bunched up tannins.
Burnt Bridge 2013 Les Collines Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Walla Walla Valley $40 89 points
This vineyard high up toward the Blue Mountains is best known for its Syrah. Aromas of garden herbs and cranberry lead to a tart, lightly grippy palate. It needs time to stretch its legs but the balance is there.
Cairdeas 2013 Consonance Red Blend Yakima Valley $39 91 points
Aromas of vanilla, coffee, cranberry, fresh herbs and licorice are out front on this Syrah (38%), Petite Sirah (38%), Mourvèdre, Grenache and Roussanne blend. The coffee flavors are tart and spritely yet full, showing a good sense of balance and an acid-driven finish.
Cairdeas 2013 Syrah Lake Chelan $45 89 points

It still drinks quite young and if the aromas meld together could move up a notch or two.
